Jefferson Bank

In 2020, a San Antonio, Texas-based bank acquired a block on a prominent mid-town artery in the San Antonio River basin for its new headquarters. The site is adjacent to Fort Sam Houston, a 19th-century military base with neoclassical and Victorian limestone structures. The architectural design references the nearby historic quarry and the neoclassical tradition established by master builder Johan Fries, creating a strong context to build upon. A substantial limestone portico anchors the façade, serving as both the primary entrance and the base for the contemporary tower. Limestone walls extend into the lobby, delineating a public space. The adjacent Treasury Building aligns with the bank, creating a shaded pedestrian passage that connects to the Pearl Brewery District. The southern façade is intentionally restrained to correspond with the scale of the surrounding eclectic neighborhood.
