Cliff House

Originally designed and inhabited by a San Antonio architect in 1950, the house was renovated in 2000 for a contemporary Texas art collection. The renovation preserved two masonry structures, a central chimney, and opened the primary spaces to establish a stronger connection to the site. A mahogany glazing system incorporating large pivoting panels wraps the new core, while a series of edge-grain fir floating planes was introduced to provide surfaces for art display. A loggia, running the length of the house, now creates a spine that terminates at a new glass stair hall descending to the lower-level terrace.
